Is ChatGPT safe for company data? AI data leakage explained
ChatGPT is not unsafe in itself, but it was not built to keep your company’s data inside your company. Whatever an employee types or uploads is sent to the provider’s servers and handled under the provider’s rules, not yours. Whether that is acceptable depends on what is being typed.
Does ChatGPT use your data?
For consumer accounts, OpenAI may use conversations to improve its models unless the user turns this off under data controls. For its business products, OpenAI says customer data is not used for training by default (OpenAI business data privacy). In both cases your text still leaves your network, is processed on the provider’s systems and is kept under its retention policy.
So the real question for a business is not only “will it train on this?” but “should this information leave the building at all?”
What AI data leakage looks like
AI data leakage is sensitive information leaving the company through AI tools. Typical cases:
- A lawyer pastes a client contract to “make this clause clearer”.
- Sales uploads a customer list to “draft follow-up emails”.
- HR pastes salary bands to “compare with the market”.
- An engineer pastes internal code containing keys or customer data.
None of this is malicious. It happens because the tools are fast and useful. That is why bans rarely work: people switch to personal accounts on their phones, which is harder to see and govern. Surveys in 2026 put data leakage at the top of AI worries, named by 61% of financial-services respondents in a Cloud Security Alliance survey and 78% of US companies in a Utimaco survey.
Three ways to use AI more safely
- Set clear rules. Say what may never be pasted into public AI: client documents, personal data, credentials, unreleased financials.
- Use business plans with training off for low-risk work, and check where the data is stored and for how long.
- Run AI on your own servers for anything sensitive. With a private, on-premise system, prompts and documents never leave your network, answers come from your own files with sources, and access follows your existing permissions.
Option 3 is what KeepInside does: thirteen AI products, from document search to HR policy drafting and customer feedback analysis, running on your servers with outbound traffic blocked. Book a 30-minute demo and see it work with the Wi-Fi switched off.
Questions people ask
Does ChatGPT use your data?
On consumer accounts, OpenAI may use conversations to improve its models unless you turn that off in the data controls. OpenAI says business products such as ChatGPT Business and Enterprise are not used for training by default. Either way, what you type is sent to and stored on OpenAI's servers.
Are ChatGPT chats private?
They are not public, but they are not inside your company either. They are processed and stored by the provider under its own policies and retention rules, which your company does not control.
What is AI data leakage?
Sensitive information leaving the company through AI tools, usually because staff paste contracts, customer data, code or financial figures into a public chatbot. Once sent, it cannot be recalled.
How can a company use AI without leaking data?
Use business plans with training turned off and clear rules, or run AI on your own servers so prompts and documents never leave your network. The second option is the only one where the data physically stays inside.
